We Pay, They Control

That stalwart of the Henry Jackson Society (dormant) and the Euston Manifesto Group (defunct), Denis MacShane, stood up yesterday to demand one hundred per cent State funding of political parties.

State funding of anything must entail some degree of State control, which can often be necessary and beneficial. But, for political parties, it would be lethal. Only parties that met the organisational and political requirements of some committee would be able to afford to contest elections.

And I think we all know who would be on that committee.

No wonder that the remnants of Jackson and Euston are so keen on the idea.
