Distance Is Relative After All, It Seems

One hardly know where to begin with Madeleine Bunting's deranged insistence that Sharon Shoesmith and Karen Matthews should be beyond criticism, because they are women.

But, comparing the two, Bunting writes that they are "several hundred miles away [from each other] and a million miles in life chances". To Bunting, you see, Dewsbury is "several hundred miles" from Haringey. It is where, say, Dingwall is. If, that is, she had ever heard of Dingwall.

The Tube doesn't go there, so it must be hundreds, nay thousands, nay even millions of miles away.

Mustn't it?
