West Britain

No trains or buses ran in Northern Ireland today.

Yes, that's right. They are all still in the public sector.

Grammar schools until very recently, with mainstream politicians who still want to bring them back.

All this, and no 1967 Abortion Act, either.

There is still somewhere in the United Kingdom that is forever Britain.

    Indeed although only 60% of schools were closed and a disproportionate number were "Catholic". As in the Health Service, the reformed church members had a conscientous objection to "strikes".

    Don't forget the buses, Thatcher's 1985 Transport Act has yet to breach Derry's walls.

    Some Protestant objection, as such, to strikes must be an Irish thing. The miners in England were largely Methodist, those in Scotland were largely Presbyterian, and those in Wales were largely "Chapel" of various descriptions.

    I think that the comments facility has been a bit temperamental for a couple of days. It normally sorts itself out on its own.
