Mitt's Mates

"He has been very consistent since he changed his mind," we are assured by Christine O'Donnell, erstwhile dabbler in witchcraft. The American New Right's ties to the Moonies also look set to be strengthened yet more if Romney became President and gave a key foreign policy role to Nile Gardiner.

But Democrats do need to reach out to those who would otherwise be or have been attracted to the prophet and apostle of socialised medicine, who ran for the Senate from the left of Ted Kennedy. Or to that pro-life gynaecologist and obstetrician, Ron Paul, with his opposition to bailouts, to wars, and to the erosion of constitutional checks and balances.

Or, it would seem, to Donald Trump, who has pulled out of moderating a debate after all, and therefore seems on course to launch an Independent candidacy. The Democrats need a candidate who, like Trump, is an economic patriot and on record as supporting the Canadian single-payer healthcare system.
