The New Rock'n'Roll

Thus was comedy described in my 1990s heyday.

Well, yes.

For all its alleged left-wingery, and its ability to annoy the forces of conservatism no end, rock'n'roll was made up of common or garden proto-Thatcherites, often tax exiles. The only exceptions were David Bowie and Eric Clapton, way out on the Far Right.

And now, among others, Jimmy Carr.

In comedy now as in rock'n'roll then, they might think that they are left-wing. Right-wing people might think that they are left-wing. But they are not.
