On Saint Swithun's Day, on the anniversary of the execution of Father John Ball, and as the Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival drew to a close, NHS Trusts in the South West declared their horrific intentions with a view to employment rights, and the crisis in dairy farming continued unaddressed.

The Coalition provides the golden opportunity to break into the West Country and to break back into the countryside, neither of which Tony Blair ever really managed, or even attempted.

Where Labour is in third place or below, then it ought to stand aside in favour of a strong local Independent such as a wronged West Country nurse (or doctor - why not?) or a protesting dairy farmer, arranging trade union and other funding.

All in return for not uncritical post-Election support as an integral part of the development of a new and permanent voice and vehicle for the mainstream, moderate majority.

But is Labour big enough?
