The Real Taboo

Not mentioning race.

Mentioning class.

The 11 or 12-year-old daughter, indeed the daughter several years older than that, of a Councillor, a social worker or a Police Officer would not be allowed by such figures to stay out all night with older men.

But the attitude of those white stalwarts to these white girls was, "You came from the gutter, anyway."

This was, and throughout the country tonight it still is, an internal white thing.

And that thing is class.

    1. Is that what you'll call P. Hitchens when he says the same things Mr. Lindsay has been saying yesterday and today? It would already be on the Hitchens Blog if he wasn't on holiday.

  2. If you mean by class the division between those employed and who broadly have income to sustain their families (on the one hand) and the underclass who don't, on the other, it is likely that the victims came from the former then I agree. This was a working class series of crime committed by working class people on working class girls. The ethnicity of the perpetrators is however more important than their class. These were Pakistani heritage gangs committing the crimes. That is the start point for the next stage of investigation.

    1. I mean class in all its complexity. And in all that complexity, men of all ethnic backgrounds, but predominantly white ones simply because of the shape of British society, are abusing white girls the length and breadth of the country at this very moment, because the class dynamic allows them to do so.

  3. This does not read like the work of "Social Marxist".

    1. Not a Marxist bone in my body. But giving the wrong answers does not equal asking the wrong questions. All sorts of traditions give a lot of the wrong answers, but ask a lot of the right questions.

For all their many, many, many faults, those who held out against the New Left, and who instead insisted on continuing to talk about economic inequality and about class, have turned out to have been asking the right questions.
