The Cut of His Jib

As a man who was there reported to Jeremy Paxman on BBC One this evening, the famous lowering of the cranes' jibs for Churchill's body happened only because the Churchill-hating dockers had been bribed to do it.

Even in the heavily Blitzed parts of London, the working classes always despised him, as he always despised them.

Always.

  1. Loving your exchanges on Twitter about Churchill, especially the one where you called someone "a minor public school pub bore", he demanded to know which minor pubic school he had gone to, so you apologised and called him "a lower-middle-class pub bore". Priceless.

  2. Churchill saved this country yet you always get some ungrateful tossers who take freedom for granted. Pretty much why "working class" never amount to anything - too bogged down with the chips on their shoulders.

    1. You sound just like him. No wonder he never won a General Election. Very much like David Cameron, and for very much the same reason.

As for "saving this country", it will be interesting to see whether anyone could continue to hold a serious academic or journalistic position in 10 years' time and come out with that one. 50 years after saying goodbye to him, we are finally saying goodbye to the cult of him.

A cult that seems only to have begun once he was dead, or at least so old as to be politically as good as dead. It never translated into votes.
